Such a cutie!

From what I've read of Laird Cregar, I get the impression he was a fun guy to be around. No surprise, considering he was such a hit onstage in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, and staged his own hit one-man show about Oscar Wilde! I'd like to think he's in Heaven, happily hobnobbing with other witty, charming, talented folks! :-)

Off to bed for now. Sad story.

Good to know about those beaver farms, Dorian, I had no clue. But I did know they're in no danger of extinction today. I think. I hope.

You're welcome once again, m'dear. I'm always happy to give credit where credit is due. It's part of the fun of blogging. Poor guy, things would have been so different for him if 1.) Laird had lived in an era in which people were smarter about getting in shape in healthy ways, and/or 2.) Laird had decided he was happy as the brilliant character actor he already was, instead of going to literally fatal lengths to try to reinvent himself as the handsome leading man he longed to become. I think your suggestion of Our Man Cregar as Nero Wolfe is BRILLIANT! Can't you just imagine Laird as Nero Wolfe with his orchids and his nimble brain? I'm telling you, Yvette, we need to get some kind of patent on a time machine! :-)

I definitely see your point about the near-extinction of beavers back in the days of the real Hudson's Bay's emergence, but then again, I suppose we can't fault people for NOT being ahead of their time. Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure there are enterprising folks out there nowadays actually running beaver farms to help the beaver population thrive, but I'm no expert, so feel free to take my ramblings with a grain of salt.

And again, Yvette, I absolutely loved your post about LADY ON A TRAIN! Thanks again for your generous link to my own recent LoaT link; you're a doll, and I don't mean one of those alleged "Deanna Durbin" dolls! :-) Glad we could both help spread the fun of LoaT to screwball noir comedy-musical lovers everywhere, my friend!DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-35800512965224322222012-06-26T15:31:06.848-04:002012-06-26T15:31:06.848-04:00Poor Laird - who's idea was that diet anyway? ...Poor Laird - who's idea was that diet anyway? What a waste. It's hard to believe he was so young when he died since to me, he always appeared older. Either/or, it's still much to young.

Jeez, why didn't anyone ever think of casting him as Nero Wolfe? HELLO....!!! The man was born to play the part. Ah well, maybe in another dimension.

I always liked Paul Muni as Louis Pasteur. But I must say the idea that happiness and prosperity were based on the slaughter of millions of beavers and other assorted furry animals doesn't recommend this pix to me, Dorian. These people single-handedly almost brought the beaver to extinction, not to mention, 'other assorted furry animals.'

But I enjoyed reading your post and learning about stuff. :)

I posted my take on one of your faves LADY ON A TRAIN, today, Dorian. Linked to your post as well. One of the things we enjoyed most about doing this particular post was discovering that so many classic movie lovers enjoy Cregar's work as much as we do, even today.

We're even more tickled that you got a kick out of our affectionate Asterix and Obelix gags -- and yes, we love TINTIN, too! In fact, I saw my first TINTIN cartoon long before even HBO's animated series in the 1990s. Our local ABC affiliate used to air animated TINTIN movies on Saturday mornings when I was just a little tyke, watching English-translated versions from overseas; I forget whether they were made in the 1950s or '60s, but either way, I loved them.

Thanks again for your enthusiastic praise, whistlinggypsy! On behalf of Team Bartilucci and our friend and noirbabes.com cohort Fredrico Fabuloso, we're glad you enjoyed the HB post, and that our atypical gamble on a costume epic paid off! :-)DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-11054609662119340832012-06-25T18:19:35.688-04:002012-06-25T18:19:35.688-04:00Dorian, as always you've written a fun review ...Dorian, as always you've written a fun review of a film entirely new (and included a reference to a 1990s one hit wonder "Rico Suave"; you are my hero). I had a close French Canadian (Québécois) friend many years a ago, and I am familiar with Asterix and Obelix (he also introduced me to Tintin). Your recasting Laird Creager and Paul Muni in the roles is simply inspired, pure genius. I, too, embrace the possibilities that might have been Laird Creager's career. I was introduced to his complicated characterizations in "I Wake Up Screaming", and was convinced he would have had a great career if he had lived. Thanks for risking a costume drama in the spirit of sharing with those who haven't seen the film. I'll keep this in mind when scanning the FMC's calender.whistlingypsyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06126688373252306609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-17450620684060067442012-06-25T15:47:49.082-04:002012-06-25T15:47:49.082-04:00Eve, I'll admit I can usually take or leave bi...Eve, I'll admit I can usually take or leave biopics and costume epics, but when I saw the very first scene in HUDSON'S BAY with my faves Laird Cregar and Paul Muni being all wild and crazy and comical and not at all stilted or dull, I couldn't resist watching the whole movie, and *voila!* I was a new HB fan! :-) Thanks a million for your kind praise of my blog posts!

P.S.: I hope you'll enjoy our upcoming BEST HITCHCOCK MOVIES HITCHCOCK NEVER MADE Blogathon, starting next Saturday on July 7th, Patricia Hitchcock's 84th birthday! :-)DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-53994407342093816202012-06-25T15:04:08.072-04:002012-06-25T15:04:08.072-04:00Never heard of this movie and it sounds like a lau...Never heard of this movie and it sounds like a laugh with the added value of a little Canadian history.
