Just from reading that review, I can see why it left you tied in knots; it sounds heartbreaking, all the more so because it sounds like it was well done.DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-47273446665995302342011-05-21T22:42:57.035-04:002011-05-21T22:42:57.035-04:00Rick, Vinnie and I was glad that you enjoy THE FRI...Rick, Vinnie and I was glad that you enjoy THE FRISCO KID, too! Vinnie was the one who introduced me to this endearing movie in the first place, and I'm so glad he did! I heard of QUACKSER FORTUNE HAS A COUSIN IN THE BRONX back when I was just a kid, and I always kept meaning to seek it out. Thanks to your recommendation, I'll make a greater effort to keep a lookout for it -- thanks!DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-28095542385695571822011-05-21T18:01:19.633-04:002011-05-21T18:01:19.633-04:00Actually, Dorian, it was an excellent foreign film...Actually, Dorian, it was an excellent foreign film that moved me very much and that's why the ending bothered me so. It's called EYES WIDE OPEN. It's a very intriguing film set in a Hassidic community in Israel (Jerusalem, I think.) It's in Hebrew, but there are subtitles.

It's all about two Hassidic men, a quiet, self contained, married butcher with a nice wife and two kids and the young man he hires to work for him in the shop. In the midst of what appears to be one of the more repressive societies, the two men fall in love.

The main theme is how religion espouses freedom but in actuality, foments inflexibility and prejudice. A startlingly good, if heartbreaking film.

And, jeez, that ending left me so sad and wondering if what I saw was actual suicide or just metaphor.

I wish someone I knew had seen this so we could dish. I do, really, recommend it.

In the meantime,
Nero Wolfe is always good for what ails me. HA!
Thanks, Doc.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-26228281394762915982011-05-21T10:35:19.643-04:002011-05-21T10:35:19.643-04:00Team B., I always enjoyed THE FRISCO KID, which I ...Team B., I always enjoyed THE FRISCO KID, which I saw on cable in the 1980s. It's one of Wilder's more subdued performances and, as a result, it's one of his best. I think it's finally become a cult film along with Wilder's QUACKSER FORTUNE HAS A COUSIN IN THE BRONX.Rick29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08358116647815569722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-36754532485226368182011-05-20T22:32:41.794-04:002011-05-20T22:32:41.794-04:00Hey, Kats (a.k.a. Wildrider, for those who came in late :-)), I remember you mentioning that you're a fan of THE FRISCO KID, so I'm very pleased that you dropped by to share your thoughts on this blog post! Also, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought Penny Peyser's hairstyle seemed a bit too modern for the Old West; you're right, it was virtually the same style she had in THE IN-LAWS. But she was likable nevertheless, as was everything else about THE FRISCO KID. I never pass up an opportunity to watch when it's on, for all the odd dated bit (the future Mrs. Belinsky's hairstyle, anyone? The same hairstyle the actress wore in The Inlaws!); and Harrison Ford was adorable and charming. It's definitely Wilder's movie, though, and in my opinion, his best (even over Willie Wonka).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-79261384011215118512011-05-20T21:33:25.422-04:002011-05-20T21:33:25.422-04:00Tsk tsk, Nate, there's just no pleasing some p...Tsk tsk, Nate, there's just no pleasing some people! :-) But when your Roger Corman Blogathon turn comes, think of all the comments you can make that'll add more depth and meaning to Team Bartilucci's "X..." blog post! :-)DorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509497574816685109.post-86617303031688875182011-05-20T21:29:21.286-04:002011-05-20T21:29:21.286-04:00Grrrr......

My personal favorite is Fatso -- Dom DeLuise was just fantastic in that, and though my family almost pure Irish, the dynamics are not much different, although Irish whiskey may show up more at family functions! Anne Bancroft runs the gamut from funny, bossy sister to frustrated screaming sister who loves her brother so much. The scene when Dom eats the huge amount of Chinese food meant for everyone is so upsetting -- this movie had such depth and pathos besides the funny.

I never forget that scene with all the Chubby Checkers -- for some reason, I always remember one of them mentioning cold corn, and Dom says with a longing look in his eyes "Cold corn!" as if were a girl he loved. Maybe that's because I like cold corn on the cob too. Scary!

I have no oidea why, but I've never seen The Frisco Kid! It's right up my alley with humor, I adore Gene Wilder, but I let it get by me. I'll have to get to Netflix right away!

Both of you are such fun to read, and these were just excellent reviews. I was watching a film the other day with a sadly tragic ending and would have liked to dish it with someone but couldn't find anyone who'd seen it. It put me out of sorts. Did the guy commit suicide at the end or didn't he?

Not a fun topic, I know.

But anyway, back to your films. For me, it doesn't seem to matter whether I've seen the films you talk about - I still enjoy reading about 'em. Wait, I think I've told you this before.
